PlainsumVideo

Compress a video to 25 MB.

Twenty-five megabytes is room for a sharp short clip or a watchable few minutes. Drop in a video with 25 MB selected and get an MP4 that fits.

The 25 MB target is already selected. Sending by email? Use the email page: attachments grow when they are encoded.

Video compressor

Drop a video to compress

MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV. The file is read inside this page and goes nowhere else.

No upload. This page's security policy forbids network connections, so your video cannot leave it. See how to check that yourself.

Plainsum Video Pro

Pro is a one-time $19. It takes input files of any size (free stops at 500 MB), compresses a queue of files one after another, asks the browser for the hardware video encoder first, and remembers your settings.

After you pay, Creem emails you a license key. You paste it on the activation page, which is the only page that talks to a server. Compressing a video never does.

How it works

1

Drop in the video

Nothing is uploaded. The browser opens the file from your disk and reads the length, size and codecs.

2

Choose the size

Pick a preset or type your own. The plan line tells you the picture size and bitrate it will use, or that the target cannot work.

3

Compress and check

Watch the progress, play the preview, and download. If the first try is too big it is re-encoded at a lower bitrate.

What 25 MB buys you

A typical phone clip is very large: a minute of 4K video from a recent phone is hundreds of megabytes. At 25 MB the compressor reduces the picture to a size suited to the bitrate, usually somewhere between 480p and 1080p for clips of a few minutes, and keeps the sound clear.

Check the result before you send it

Play the preview on the page, then check the file size shown next to the download. The tool only offers a file that is at or under 25 MB.

How much video fits in 25 MB

A file's size is its bitrate multiplied by its length, so the only things that decide whether a clip fits are how long it is and how much of the budget goes to picture and sound. This table shows what the compressor on this page picks for a 1080p, 30 frames per second clip with sound. It is worked out with the same planning code the tool runs, so it is a good guide to what you will get. How sharp a particular clip looks also depends on how much moves in it.

Questions

What has a 25 MB limit?

Gmail's attachment limit is 25 MB for all attachments in a message together, and Discord's free limit was 25 MB for a period before 2024. Forms and chat tools often use it too. Check the limit of the service you are using.

Is 25 MB safe for a Gmail attachment?

It can be too big. Email encodes attachments in a way that makes them roughly a third larger, so a file very close to 25 MB can be refused. The email page defaults to 18 MB for that reason.

How long a video fits in 25 MB?

The table on this page shows the picture size the compressor picks for lengths from 30 seconds to 20 minutes. Short clips keep their full size; longer ones are scaled down.

Will it re-encode a video that is already under 25 MB?

It tells you the file is already under the target and does not need compressing. You can still run it, for example to trim or to remove the sound.

Does it keep my phone video's shape?

Yes. An upright video stays upright, and the picture is scaled with the same aspect ratio.

What if my browser cannot encode H.264?

The tool falls back to VP9 video and Opus sound in an MP4 and says so on the result. Those play in current browsers and many players, though some older software may not open them.
