Statement converter

Drop statement PDFs here

Bank or credit-card statements saved as PDFs from your bank's website. Several files at once are fine. The files are read inside this page and go nowhere else.

Add more statements

No upload. This page's security policy forbids network connections, so your file cannot leave it. See how to check that yourself.

    Plainsum Pro

Pro is a one-time $19: unlimited pages, merge several statements, and QBO, OFX and QIF export for QuickBooks, Quicken and similar tools.

After you pay, Creem emails you a license key. You paste it on the activation page, which is the only page that talks to a server. Converting never does.

    How it works

    1

    Drop the PDF

Use the statement you downloaded from your bank, not a scan or a screenshot. Multi-page statements are read as one table.

    2

    Look at the check

The stamp above the table says whether opening balance plus transactions equals the closing balance, and by how much it is off if not.

    3

    Download .xlsx

Dates, amounts and balances arrive as values you can sort, filter and sum. The header row is frozen and filters are on.

Invented example data. Wrapped descriptions are joined into one cell. The year comes from the statement period when the rows only show "Jan 02".

    What is in the workbook

    Sheet 1: Transactions

One row per transaction with Date, Description, Amount and Balance columns. Money out is negative, money in is positive. If you prefer the bank's own Debit and Credit layout, pick it in the options before downloading. A Source file column is added when you merge several statements.

    Sheet 2: Accuracy check

Opening balance, total money in, total money out, the closing balance the statement printed, the closing balance worked out from your rows, and the difference. Keep this sheet with the file so a reviewer can see what was verified.

What it reads, and what it does not

Plainsum finds the header row of the transaction table, notes where each column sits, and assigns every line to a column by position. It handles statements where the amount is one signed column, where debits and credits are separate, where negatives are in (parentheses) or end in a minus sign, where amounts carry CR or DR, and where dates are US (01/31/2025), day-first (31/01/2025, 31.01.2025) or written with month names. Numbers like 1,234.56 and 1.234,56 both work.

It cannot read scanned statements, because a scan is a picture with no text in it. A statement downloaded from your bank's website almost always has a text layer even if it looks like a scan. If a PDF has no text, Plainsum says so instead of returning an empty table.

    Questions

How do I convert a bank statement PDF to Excel?

Drop the PDF on the box at the top of this page, check the preview and the accuracy check, then choose Download Excel (.xlsx). The workbook has a Transactions sheet and an Accuracy check sheet. It opens in Excel, Numbers, LibreOffice and Google Sheets.

Why not just copy and paste from the PDF into Excel?

Pasting usually collapses each row into a single cell, splits wrapped descriptions across rows, and turns negative numbers into text. Plainsum finds the columns from the header row, joins wrapped lines back into the description, and writes dates and amounts as real values so formulas and pivot tables work.

Does the Excel file contain real dates and numbers?

Yes. Dates are Excel dates formatted yyyy-mm-dd, and amounts and balances are numbers with two decimals. Money out is negative. You can switch to separate Debit and Credit columns before downloading.

What if the totals do not match?

The accuracy check shows the difference. Look at the rows marked amber or red first. Common causes are a transaction on a page the PDF lists out of order, a wrong sign on a row, or a column that was mapped to the wrong role. Open "Fix columns, dates or signs" to change the mapping, or edit cells directly.

Can I convert several months into one workbook?

With Pro, yes. Add every statement, tick "Merge all files into one export", and the rows are combined in date order with a Source file column.

    Is there a page limit?

The free tier converts 20 pages a day, counted in your browser. Pro has no limit.
