-1243.65and1086.87. Dot decimal, two places, no symbols, no grouping. Money out is negative. - Debit and Credit mode: two positive columns instead of one signed column, empty where it does not apply.
- Balance: included when the statement prints a running balance, and can be left out.
Why a plain CSV from a PDF is hard
A PDF stores each piece of text at a position on the page. There is no table in the file, so a converter has to rebuild the rows and columns from where the text sits. The usual failures are descriptions that wrap onto a second line and become a bogus row, amounts that slide into the wrong column, and negatives written in parentheses or with a CR/DR suffix that come out unsigned. Plainsum handles those cases and then checks its own work against the statement's balances, so a failure shows up as a mismatch instead of as a silent error in your books.
Questions
How do I convert a bank statement PDF to CSV?
Drop the PDF on this page, check the accuracy check and the preview, then choose Download CSV. The conversion happens in your browser and the file is created on your computer.
What does the CSV look like?
A header row of Date, Description, Amount and Balance, then one row per transaction. Dates are ISO (2025-01-31) unless you choose a US or day-first format. Amounts have a dot as the decimal separator and exactly two decimals, with no currency symbols or thousands separators.
Will Excel open the CSV correctly?
Yes. The file is UTF-8 with a byte-order mark so accented characters in descriptions show properly. If Excel in a European locale expects semicolons, use Download Excel instead, or import the CSV through Data, From Text/CSV.
Can I get separate Debit and Credit columns?
Yes. Under the table choose "Debit and Credit columns" before you download. Many budgeting and bookkeeping imports want money out and money in as separate positive columns.
Why does a description start with an apostrophe?
If a description begins with =, +, - or @, spreadsheet programs may try to run it as a formula. Plainsum puts a leading apostrophe in front so it stays text.
Can I import the CSV into my accounting software?
Most accounting and budgeting tools accept a CSV with date, description and amount columns, and map the columns on import. For QuickBooks, Quicken and similar tools that import bank files directly, Pro also exports QBO, OFX and QIF.
